BETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH

About Us

In February 1997, a courageous group of 75 individuals stepped out on faith and formed Bethany Baptist Church .  The first worship service, under the leaderships of Rev. Margaret Brown, Deacon Willie Brown, Deacon David Campbell, II and the late Mother Evon Gethers, was held at Nehemiah Lodge #51 at 569 Rutledge Ave. , Charleston , SC.

In the spirit of togetherness, the members chose the name, “ Bethany Baptist Church ”, which was suggested by the late Sis Alma Simmons, a founding member.  Sis. Simmons referenced the 24 Chapter of The Gospel According to Luke as scriptural basis for her suggestion of the name “ Bethany ”.  In selecting the name “ Bethany ”, the members communicated their vision of a loving and spirit filled church where each member would be encouraged to use his or her talents to the glorification of Almighty God; a church where everyone would feel welcome and valued.

Rev. Margaret Brown presided over Sunday morning services during the first eight months of Bethany ’s existence.  Rev. Patrick C. Luke, Sr. served as the Church’s first pastor from November 1997 to September 2003.  The current pastor Rev. Eric L. Mack was elected on June 12, 2004 .

In December 1997 worship services were moved to the Baptist Educational Center in North Charleston , SC.   In February 1999 the church was moved to 790 Meeting Street, where services were held in what is now, The Mother Evon Gethers Fellowship Hall.  The current sanctuary was completed and dedicated in December 2004.

Over the past 13 years, Bethany has grown spiritually with the addition of many new members and ministries.  Although, the bethany family has experienced the passing of a number of members, in additional to other challenges, God has continued to pour out His blessings upon his people.

Therefore, being a people of strong faith, the members of Bethany B aptist Church will continue to go forward in Christ and will remain grateful and steadfast knowing that their labor is not vain in the Lord.

May God forever bless the people of His Church!
